Owner charged a $300 damage deposit (it is illegal to charge damage deposits according to the Residential Tenancies Act of Ontario) and upon our departure withheld a portion of it citing that we had not cleaned sufficiently. We had cleaned thoroughly, sweeping all floors and throwing away all garbage. He found a few things that had not been done (saying the floors had not been mopped and that we had left garbage on the kitchen counters) and used this as a reason to keep the damage deposit. He offered to give us a discount if we returned. This is his common practice to inflate the cost of the cottage, he will add an extra charge to provide you incentive to return again. Please be extremely careful and do not rent this cottage.
